Biography
Sebastian is a Civil Engineer with 9 years of experience in the public and private sector, with 4.5 years of experience as an academic. He received his BSc in Construction Management in 2010 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, where his passion for structures was born. Three years later, in 2013, he obtained his BSc in Civil Engineering with a diploma in Structural Engineering at the same university. After his graduation, he worked over four and a half years as a Structural Engineer in Chile, Argentina and the United Kingdom, where performed analysis, design, and supervision of different kinds of projects in steel, concrete, timber, and masonry buildings (56,000+ sqm) including multi-storey residential/office buildings, schools, and hotels. In parallel, he has been participating in academia as an adjunct professor since 2014.
After some years working in the industry, he decided to update and improve his skills and knowledge related to structural and seismic design. As a result, in 2019, he obtained his MSc in Earthquake Engineering, part of the Advanced Structural Engineering cluster, at Imperial College London, UK. Afterwards, he returned to Chile, working two years in the public sector, in academia, and as an independent structural engineer. He is convinced that a strong link has to be created between the classroom and on-site work, between earthquake and structural engineering as a tool for society, both in academia and professional practice in the industry, motivated himself to pursue his doctoral studies in the UME School at IUSS Pavia.
