“FROM PHENOTYPING TO THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS IN COGNITIVE NEUROLOGY: A FOCUS ON PRIMARY PROGRESSIVE APHASIA AND POST-COVID SYNDROME”
Speaker: Jordi Matias-Guiu
Clinical Researcher in Neurology, Dept. of Neurology, Institute of Neuroscience, Hospital Clinico San Carlos, Madrid, Spain
IUSS, visiting scholar
This seminar will explore the evolving landscape of Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), focusing on diagnostic and classification approaches as well as on innovative therapeutic interventions such as brain stimulation. PPA, a subtype of neurodegenerative disorders, presents unique challenges in identification and categorization. Recent breakthroughs in diagnosis, classification and promising frontier of brain stimulation techniques (e.g., transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation), focusing on the personalization of these techniques, will be discussed. The discussion will also encompass the cognitive consequences of Post-COVID syndrome. Cognitive changes in Post-COVID syndrome are one of the most frequent and disabling symptoms. Main cognitive characteristics, the relationship with fatigue and neuropsychiatric symptoms, neuroimaging underpinnings and potential mechanisms will be discussed. Valuable perspectives on diagnostic approaches, classification frameworks, and potential therapeutic interventions will be presented.
