Abstract:
Structuralism is a pervasive notion which has affected practically all branches of knowledge ever since its first establishment in the early XX century, deeply characterizing it. In this talk, the linguistic roots of Structuralism will be exposed showing the formal and empirical mechanisms which lead to its formulation. We will do so by concretely exploring a simple case study regarding the Italian vowel system and the impact of this analysis on our understanding of human language. Eventually, we will address some challenging questions Structuralism naturally yields to, in particular, a foundational one: what is the ontological nature of formal representations?
