“THE CASE FOR PANPSYCHISM”

Abstract:
The problem of consciousness is the challenge of understanding how consciousness fits into our overall theory of reality. We know that consciousness exists, and so it must fit in somehow, but the standard options for trying to make it fit face deep challenges. Dualism is hard to square with the data of neuroscience. And materialism is hard to square with the reality of consciousness itself. Panpsychism -- the view that consciousness is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of the physical world -- sounds strange at first, but it avoids the deep difficulties that plague more traditional views on consciousness. It's a view we should take very seriously indeed.
