Theoretical linguistics and history of linguistics can profit from each other, as is the case for any
discipline, according to many philosophers of science. Chomsky’s distinction between ideal history
and actual history may be useful in this sense. As case studies, the concepts of predication; and
‘immediate constituent analysis; will be investigated. It will be also shown that a comparison
between analyses of the same topic worked out in different historical moments and in different
theoretical frameworks is legitimate, despite the possible objections based on Thomas Kuhn; s well-
known notion of paradigm.
