“EPISTEMIC INFINITISM AND METAPHYSICAL INFINITISM”

June 16th 2021, 14.00

Speaker:

  • Morganti Matteo – Roma Tre University

Abstract:

In this talk I am going to discuss, and offer a limited defence of, infinitism – the view that there is not, or at least need not be, a fundamental ‘basis’ or ‘initial point’ to any specific domain. More specifically, starting from an analogy between the problem of determining the structure of justification and that of identifying the fundamental ‘architecture’ of reality, I will suggest that epistemic infinitism and metaphysical infinitism are usefully developed in parallel. Doing so is, in particular, helpful when it comes to answering the vicious regress objections that are typically raised against infinitist views. Contrary to these objections, based on both general considerations concerning acceptable explanations and specific examples from contemporary science, I will contend that infinitism is a coherent option and may in fact be regarded as preferable to the more entrenched foundationalist views of both justification and metaphysical structure.
