Workshop “Varieties of Phenomenology”

May 13-14, 2026

IUSS Pavia

Abstract: In the last few decades, there has been a surge of interest in the use of phenomenological analysis in cognitive science and philosophy, i.e. the study of inner or outer phenomena from a first-person perspective. Examining phenomenal experience can reveal fundamental structures of reality that are also relevant to existential concerns and everyday life. From classical phenomenology to more recent applications in analytic philosophy and the cognitive sciences, the scope of phenomenological analysis has expanded to encompass a wide range of inquiries, making it appropriate to speak in terms of 'varieties of phenomenology'. In this series of talks, we bring together scholars from various traditions to explore the possibility of identifying common ground among the diverse applications of phenomenology. Our guest speakers will guide us through this complex landscape, providing insights into fundamental theoretical questions that are also relevant to human flourishing.

Confirmed speakers: Giovanna Colombetti (University of Exeter), Bruno Cortesi (University of Graz), Francesca Forlè (Vita-Salute San Raffaele University), Danilo Manca (University of Pisa), Valentina Martinis (University of Liège), Søren Overgaard (University of Copenhagen).
