CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR ADMISSION TO UNDERGRADUATE COURSES FOR THE A.Y. 2026/2027- UNIMI

The EXAM PROGRAM for the call for applications for AY 2026/2027 will be published in the coming days.                   

Admission to the Undergraduate Courses takes place by national competitive examination, based solely on merit.

There are two types of competition:
►admission to the 1st  year of the single-cycle or three-year first-level degree programme
►admission to the 1st year of the two-year second-level degree programme

The admission tests are designed to assess the overall suitability of candidates: knowledge of the chosen disciplines, general education, aptitude for research and critical thinking skills.

Students on the IUSS School’s Undergraduate Courses are students of the University of Pavia or students of the University Statale of Milan and are also students of the Colleges of Merit legally recognised and accredited by the Ministry of University and Research.

To be admitted to IUSS School, students must gain entry to the Colleges of Merit in accordance with the respective calls for applications published on their respective websites.

For students of the University of Pavia, the relevant colleges are  Collegio Ghislieri, Collegio Borromeo, Collegio Santa Caterina da Siena, Collegio Nuovo, Collegio Volta, Collegio Cairoli, the latter two managed by the Ente per il Diritto allo Studio (EDISU) di Pavia and only for the three-year first-level and single-cycle degree programme.

For students at the University of Milan, the relevant merit-based hall of residence is Collegio di Milano.

NUMBER OF PLACES – First-cycle degree programmes/Single-cycle degree programmes

For the 2026/2027 academic year, the call for applications provides for 30 places for admission to the first year of the single-cycle degree programme or first-cycle degree programme of the standard degree courses, distributed as follows across the departments:

  • n. 15 free places for the Human and Life Sciences Class, allocated as follows across the fields:

                 - n. 7 free places for the Human Sciences Area

                - n. 8 free places for the Biomedical Sciences Area

  • n. 15 free places for the Science, Technology and Society Class, distributed as follows across the fields:

               - n. 8 free places for the the Science and Technological Area

                - n. 7 free places for the Social Sciences Area

 

NUMBER OF PLACES - Two-year Second-level Degree

For the 2026/2027 academic year, the call for applications provides for 8 places for admission to the first year of the two-year second-level degree programme of the Ordinary Courses, distributed as follows across the Classes:

  • n. 4 places for the Class of Human and Life Sciences, distributed as follows across the fields:

            - n. 2 places for the Human Sciences Area

           - n. 2 places for the Biomedical Sciences Area

  • n. 4 places for the Class of Science, Technology and Society, distributed as follows across the fields:

          - n. 2 places for the field of Science and Technology

           - n. 2 places for the field of Social Sciences

Before the start of the admission examinations, the School may decide to increase the number of places available.

CRITERIA FOR THE ALLOCATION OF PLACES

Successful applicants must enrol in one of the following Merit Colleges in order to complete their enrolment in the Standard Degree Programmes: Almo Collegio Borromeo, Collegio Ghisleri, Collegio Nuovo – Fondazione Sandra ed Enea Mattei, Fondazione Collegio Universitario Santa Caterina da Siena and Residenza Universitaria biomedica.

In addition, two places are available, exclusively for the three-year first-cycle/single-cycle programme, at the Collegio Volta and the Collegio Cairoli, which are also Merit Colleges managed by the Pavia Right to Education Authority, allocated as follows: 1 place for the field of Science and Technology and 1 place for the field of Biomedical Sciences.

Admission to Merit Colleges is governed by the respective competition announcementd published on the institutional websites of the Colleges.

STUDY GRANTS

The IUSS School awards each student a study grant of €5,000.00 (five thousand/00) per annum to cover the costs of college accommodation.

Merit-based halls of residence may offer financial support specifically for students on standard degree programmes. For further information on these conditions, please refer to the admission notices of the individual halls of residence.

Subject to students fulfilling all their obligations, the study grant is guaranteed for the entire duration of their university studies.

NUMBER OF PLACES – First-cycle/Single-cycle degree programmes

For the 2026/2027 academic year, the call for applications provides for 16 places for admission to the first-cycle and single-cycle standard degree programmes, distributed as follows across the classes:

  • n. 8 places for the Class of Humanities and Life Sciences, distributed as follows among the fields:

         - n. 4 places for the field of Humanities

         - n. 4 places for the field of Biomedical Sciences

  • n. 8 places for the Class of Science, Technology and Society, distributed as follows among the fields:

          - n. 4 places for the Science and Technology Area

           - n. 4 places for the Social Sciences Area

The relevant College is the Milan College. Admission to this College is a prerequisite for the allocation of a place on the standard degree programmes.

CONDITIONS FOR THE ALLOCATION OF PLACES - First-Level Bachelor’s Degree/Single Cycle

Successful candidates must necessarily gain admission to the Milan College. The rules for admission to the Milan College are set out in the relevant selection procedure; this means that the allocation of the IUSS place is subject to the candidate’s admission to the Milan College.

Students who are awarded a resident student place or a non-resident student place (i.e. a student who does not reside at the hall of residence but who participates in cultural activities and has access to the services offered by the hall of residence) in accordance with the Milan Hall of Residence’s call for applications are eligible.

In particular, the successful candidate in the IUSS competition:

  • to obtain a place as a non-resident student at the Milan College, must have been deemed eligible as set out in the College’s call for applications;
  • to obtain a place as a resident student at the Milan College, must have been awarded that place according to the ranking list of the College’s competition.

Successful candidates who, at the time of publication of the ranking list, have not yet attended the eligibility interview at the Milan College may attend a make-up interview organised by the Milan College itself. The interview will take place on dates to be announced and will serve solely for the purpose of granting eligibility as a non-resident student.

N.B.: For students who have been awarded a place as a non-resident student at the Collegio di Milano, the University of Milan guarantees accommodation by providing a bed in a twin room at a cost of €400 per month (subject to the allocation of student accommodation under the University of Milan’s Accommodation Call for the 2026/2027 academic year).

NUMBER OF PLACES - Two-year 2nd-level degree programmes

For the 2026/2027 academic year, the call for applications provides for 20 places for admission to the  2nd-level ordinary degree programmes, distributed as follows across the classes:

  • 10 places for the Class of Human and Life Sciences, divided as follows between the fields:

               - 5 places for the field of Human Sciences;

              - 5 places for the field of Biomedical Sciences;

  • 10 places for the Class of Science, Technology and Society, divided as follows between the fields:

               - 5 places for the Science and Technology Area,

              - 5 places for the Social Sciences Area.

Before the start of the entrance examinations, the School may decide to increase the number of places available.

CONDITIONS FOR THE ALLOCATION OF PLACES - 2nd-Level Two-Year Programme

Successful candidates must be enrolled as either resident or non-resident students or gain admission to the Milan College. Admission to the College is governed by the rules set out in the relevant selection procedure; this means that the allocation of the IUSS place is conditional upon the candidate’s enrolment at the Milan College.

Successful candidates will be admitted provided they are already holders of a place or have been awarded a place as a resident or non-resident student at the Collegio di Milano.

Successful candidates who intend to enrol at the University of Milan and who, at the time of publication of the ranking list, have not yet attended the suitability interview at the Collegio di Milano may attend a catch-up interview organised by the Collegio di Milano itself. The interview will take place on dates to be announced by the Collegio and will serve solely for the purpose of determining suitability as a non-resident student.

N.B.: For students who have been awarded a place as a non-resident student at the Collegio di Milano, the University of Milan guarantees accommodation by providing a bed in a twin room at a cost of €400 per month (subject to the allocation of student accommodation under the University of Milan’s Accommodation Call for the 2025/2026 academic year)

STUDY GRANTS

To successful students, the University of Milan grants:

- full exemption from university fees for the entire duration of the course of study;

- an annual study grant, the amount of which for the 2025-26 academic year is €1,500.00 (one thousand five hundred/00).

Subject to the students’ full compliance with all their obligations, the exemption from university fees and the scholarship are guaranteed for the entire duration of the degree programme.

TYPE, EXAMS AND TIMETABLE - First-Level Three-Year Degree/Single-Cycle Degree

  • EXAM FORMAT

The entrance exams for the First-Level and Single-Cycle Degree Programme consist of two written exams and two oral exams.

The total duration of the written exams must not exceed 5 hours, and papers may not be handed in before 1 hour has elapsed.

  • CHOICE OF SUBJECTS FOR THE WRITTEN EXAMS

The exams cover two subjects chosen by the candidate from the following:

For the SUV Class (Human Sciences stream) and for the STS Class (Social Sciences stream), the core subjects are:

Italian

Latin

Greek

Philosophy

History

For the SUV Class (Biomedical Sciences Stream) and for the STS Class (Science and Technology Stream), the core subjects are:

Mathematics

Physics

Chemistry

Biology

The candidate’s choice of subjects for the examinations must comply with the following rules:

- the first subject must be one of the core subjects for the Class and Field for which the candidate is sitting the examination, in accordance with the scheme set out above;

- the second subject must be different from that chosen by the candidate for the first examination and may be chosen freely and independently of the Class and Field for which the candidate is sitting the examination.

  • WRITTEN EXAMINATION SCHEDULE

The written examinations will take place in person on Thursday 3 September 2026, starting at 10.00 am, at Palazzo San Tommaso – Piazza del Lino 2 – entrance via Via Siro Comi 55 – Pavia.

  • ORAL EXAMS

The oral exams will focus on the two subjects chosen for the written exams.

The exam will consist of a discussion aimed at assessing the candidate’s knowledge.

The oral exams will take place from Friday 11 September 2026 onwards, in accordance with the schedule to be published in the ‘Competitions, Calls for Applications and Selections – Calls for Students’ section of the School’s website.

The oral examinations will take place online via the Teams platform.

The examination syllabuses will be made available in the coming days.

EXAMINATION TYPES AND CALENDAR - 2nd-Level Two-Year Programme

  •  EXAMINATION FORMAT

The examinations for admission to the 2nd-Level Two-Year Programme will take place in oral form and will be held in person.

If a candidate is unable to attend in person in Pavia, they may submit a reasoned request to the committee by writing to concorsoco@iusspavia.it to sit the interview online, in accordance with the instructions that will be sent to candidates via email.

 

  • EXAMINATION TYPE

The admission competition for the 2nd Level 2 Two-Year Programme involves an assessment of qualifications and an interview.

The interview will assess the candidate’s motivation and may also cover the qualifications submitted for admission.

The overall mark is determined by the sum of the score obtained in the assessment of qualifications and the mark obtained in the interview.

 

  • CALENDAR

The interview timetables will be published in the ‘Competitions, Calls for Applications and Selections – Calls for Students’ section of the School’s website and communicated via email to candidates.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS – First-cycle degree and single-cycle degree

Applicants are eligible for admission, regardless of their nationality, provided they meet the following requirements:

  • have obtained a qualification that grants access to the University’s degree programmes, with a minimum mark of 80/100; If the qualification was obtained abroad, the School reserves the right to assess its validity for the purposes of admission to standard degree programmes;
  • are not enrolled, for the 2025/2026 academic year, on degree programmes within the Class and Field for which they are applying;
  • meet the requirements to validly apply for admission to the chosen Colleges in accordance with the relevant calls for applications.

Those who turn 23 or older during 2026 are not eligible to apply.

In the application form, candidates must include a copy of their identity document and declare:

  • any request for disability assistance;
  • the academic qualification held (type of qualification, institution where it was obtained, location, date of award, grade achieved). If the qualification has not yet been obtained at the time of application, it is possible to submit the application and provide the details later, but without exception by the closing date of the procedure (Friday 28 August 2026 at 12.00 noon);
  • that you have no criminal convictions and that no criminal proceedings are currently pending against you;
    that you are not enrolled for the 2025/2026 academic year on degree courses relating to the Class and Field for which you are applying;
  • that you have verified that the degree course you intend to enrol on relates to the academic field for which you are applying.

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS – Two-year Level 2 Course

Admission to the selection process is open to candidates who, regardless of their nationality, meet the following requirements:

  • have obtained a bachelor’s degree within the last three years, or undertake to obtain it by 31 December 2026 at the latest;
  • have passed the exams required by their three-year degree programme with an average mark of at least 27/30 for each year and have obtained a mark of at least 24/30 in each exam;
  • if not already college students, are eligible to apply for admission to their chosen colleges, in accordance with the relevant calls for applications;
  • are not enrolled for the 2025/2026 academic year on Master’s degree courses relating to the Class and Field for which they are applying.

Those who turn 26 or older during 2026 are not eligible for the competition.

Candidates may submit a single application for admission to the national competition and only for one Class and one Field.

In the application form, candidates must include a copy of their identity document and declare:

  1. any request for disability assistance;
  2. their qualification (bachelor’s degree or equivalent foreign qualification, university where it was obtained, location, year, and grade achieved). Candidates who have not yet obtained a bachelor’s degree must declare that they will do so no later than 31 December 2026;
  3. the names of two referees and their email addresses, whom the School will contact to obtain an assessment of the candidate, which the selection committee will evaluate alongside other qualifications, provided it is received by 12:00 noon on Friday 28 August 2026. It is the candidate’s responsibility to complete the application in good time to allow the referees to submit their assessments by the aforementioned deadline;
  4. that they have passed the exams required by their three-year degree programme with an average mark of at least 27/30 for each year and have obtained a mark of at least 24/30 in each exam;
  5. not to have any criminal convictions and not to have any ongoing criminal proceedings;
  6. not to be enrolled for the 2025/2026 academic year on master’s degree programmes relating to the Class and Field for which they are applying.

Applications must, on pain of exclusion, include the following attachments:

  • a personal statement, in which the candidate outlines their academic interests and motivations and demonstrates their potential for cultural and professional development (max. 5 pages, 2,500 words);
  • curriculum vitae and academic record;
  • an abstract of the thesis if it has already been defended or a description of the thesis project.

Students on the standard courses at the IUSS School are students of the University of Pavia or students of the University Statale of Milan and are also students of merit-based university colleges that are legally recognised and accredited by the Ministry of University and Research.
